My nephew is getting married and he's fiances mother told his mom that she is suppose to pay for the bridal bouquet and the flowers for the wedding party and the mom's, is this true or is she just telling her that because she's spent more than she can afford?
Who should buy the flowers for the wedding, the brides family or the grooms?
This is the tradition, I just find it add that the MOB would assume that the grooms side would pitch in. This is why the bride and groom need to talk to their parents about who is contributing what at the beginning. Nothing should ever be assumed by anyone!!

Reply:There is no "supposed to" about it. These days, wedding expenses are paid by whoever volunteers to pay. However, there IS a rule against using the occasion of a wedding to bully and browbeat people into taking on expenses they'd prefer to avoid.
Reply:Rules vary from culture to culture so without knowing what culture it is difficult to determine. When my Brother in law married his wife (she is Vietnamese and we are Jewish) it was very tricky working out the particulars. It has to come down to mutual agreement and not expectations. Good Luck!

Reply:Niki - the "traditional" answer is not necessarily the "correct" answer. These days no one follows those rules, so it's not correct for our times. I realize you state that it's tradition, but I just don't believe in the spirit of your answer.
If the parents of the bride %26amp; groom want to pitch in, that's great, but it's not a requirement. And no one follows the "this side has to pays for this" and "that side has to pay for that". The parents pay for what they want to; everything else is up to the bride %26amp; groom.
Please don't use tradition to try to force one side to pay for something.

Bride and family are responsible for all the rest. However in some cases, the expense has been shared, but the grooms parents will have to offer to share that responsibility, and you don't ask, that is rude.
We recently had a relative who got married, due to the fact that he had worked with government officials, those officials were on the guest list, so needless to say, his family picked up most of the tab for the wedding, because his family had to have these political people there.

She has a valentines themes wedding, but I imagine that it would look just as pretty with any tall elegant flower.

What should I do about my wedding flowers?
My fiancee's mom offered to do my flowers. She thought it would be a good project for her since she had a brain anyeurism last summer and can no longer work. I got together pics and showed her what I wanted and she said no problem. The thing is, she's finished my bmaids flowers (supposed to be bouquest of calla lilies, very simple looking) and they are calla lily pins with a rose at the bottom. Now, we talked about that for the guys but I guess she got confused (she's very forgettful since her anyeurism, to the point of calling 3 or 4 times in a row to ask the same question). Well now my sisters who are my bmaids are complaining about having to pin something to their dresses since they're paying for the dresses. I'm sad that the flowers won't be the way I'd hoped, but have pretty much gotten over that. I am just sick of hearing my sisters gripe about how I should tell my fmil to redo the flowers and I don't want to hurt my fmil's feelings over something this silly. What should I do?

You and your future husband are so blessed that she is still with you for this wonderful occassion. How wonderful of you to let her be a part by doing something so important - she must feel like a queen.
Now for the whiney babies - sorry - your sisters - tell them to get over themselves. Corsages have been pinned to dresses since the Victorian era! They will not ruin their dresses for pete sake. Tell them to put on their big girl panties, shut their yaps, and smile!
Reply:It's your wedding %26amp; if you're OK with the flowers, they should be fine. Pins will no hurt their dresses at all. Just explain to your sisters that while they aren't what you asked for, you're happy your FMIL was involved %26amp; did a good job with what she did.
Reply:You could ask your fmil to make bouquets, too. (I suggest you write down instructions, since she is so forgetful.) That way the girls can wear the pins, and carry the bouquets, and during the reception they will still have on the pins. Or carry the bouquets during the wedding, and use the pins for the reception. If you really don't want to change anything now, because it might hurt her feelings, then don't. These are just suggestions to make your sisters, bridesmaids, and your fmil all happy.

They need to grow up. Someday, she will no longer be here and you will look back at your wedding pictures and remember how she wanted to do your flowers and did them for you. Let me know, NOW, that because of the flowers, you do not want to be in this wedding. Because, if you do not because of that, maybe it is better off. And when ANYONE asks me about why, I would be happy to tell them that YOU ACTED LIKE A ******** CRYBABY BECAUSE YOU DID NOT WANT TO PIN SOME STUPID, ******** FLOWERS ON YOUR DAMN DRESS!!! And, thus, that is why you are not a bridesmaid. SO SUCK IT UP, OR, GET OUT! I WOULD BE HAPPY TO REPAY HALF OF THE DRESS FOR YOU! Or you if she hasn't already made corsages for the mothers, hostesses, etc. let her know you would like to use the flowers she made for them and hope she is able to make additional bouquets (again with specific instructions and pictures) for the bridesmaids to "hand carry" when they walk down the aisle. If there is not enough time to make additional bouquets, just let the girls know that your FMIL worked hard to make these flowers and you'd appreciate if they would just wear them and stop complaining about it out of respect for all the hard work she made.

Is anyone doing there own decor for the wedding? I am trying to save money by doing my own decorating but don't know where to start. Also is anyone using silk flowers for all there floral needs?

Reply:While I'm a huge fan of real flowers, some of the silk arrangements can look lovely. I would opt for simple and elegant in whichever you chose. Check with bridal supply stores in the area some actually will rent centerpiece arrangements and then you will just have to worry about your flowers. My sister in law rented arrangements for the tables, but purchased real flowers for herself %26amp; bridal party. That was a very lovely mix. Good luck.

Some flowers are really nice and look real if you pick the right ones. Look at Gerbera Daisies!
As for the decor, look at the linens, the chair covers (which are something the bride can choose to use or not), what you want your centerpieces to look like, drapes, wall decorations, etc. It's your wedding, make it you.

Reply:my daughter and i both used silk flowers for her wedding it allowed us to save money, make them up ahead of time and my other daughter is getting married now and we are doing the same thing, in fact she went and priced them and compared the looks of them at a craft store and a dollar store, guess what the dollar stores looked nicer, but do your own comparisons, really it's a lot cheaper, and the greatest thing is you get exactly what you want and know they are done ahead of time, no florist disasters, all of the flowers at the church, and reception were done by us also, both girls saved a fortune compared to a florist, money that could be spent on things that we couldn't do or for a honeymoon, we also did the candy bowls and candles for the tables and church, one of my daughters didn't go with the traditional wedding cake, what she did was have just about every kind of cheese cake you could think of and had them all on pedestals at different heights, so pretty and so yummy, everyone loved it, good luck and have fun use you imagination there are many more things than flowers that you can do if you set your mind to it
Reply:I'm a firm believer in living within a budget and using creative ways to do that. I also believe that people shouldn't try to do something just because it's the most popular way to do it. The wedding industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and wedding prices are so much higher than a comparable item that is not for a wedding. You can get two prices for most venues. One price is for a banquet/family party/dinner. The other price is for a wedding, and of course the wedding is higher. People are making big money off of brides.
But back to your question: Silk flowers are perfectly fine to use if that helps you to have the wedding you want. They won't be the same as real, but you already know that. Just look at individual flowers and find the ones that look real, and you can pull it off.
Reply:Silk flowers are the best for budget! but real flowers are more elegant. However, if you have allergies or a strict budget then you should go for silk and save your nose, or some money for something that you could use more, like the dream dress!

Like because my husband and I are getting "re-married" next Halloween we are doing pumpkins and stuff on the tables and what not but we are going to be saving money by doing silk flowers and such. Reply:i will be using silk flowers for all but my bouquet (because i want just a simple nosegay, and the flowers are symbolic for my fiance's fraternity and my sorority, so i think that it is important that they are real...but anyway...lol) but i think that not only are they more cost efficient, but they look better at the end of the night. :) i will use them on my cake between the layers, and for the small amount that will be on the tables. great use of budget! and good luck!

The wedding industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and wedding prices are so much higher than a comparable item that is not for a wedding. You can get two prices for most venues. One price is for a banquet/family party/dinner. The other price is for a wedding, and of course the wedding is higher. People are making big money off of brides.
But back to your question: Silk flowers are perfectly fine to use if that helps you to have the wedding you want. They won't be the same as real, but you already know that. Just look at individual flowers and find the ones that look real, and you can pull it off.
Reply:Silk flowers are the best for budget! but real flowers are more elegant. However, if you have allergies or a strict budget then you should go for silk and save your nose, or some money for something that you could use more, like the dream dress!

Reply:I'm doing my own decorating, and some of the silk flowers you can get look so close to the real things its amazing. Like because my husband and I are getting "re-married" next Halloween we are doing pumpkins and stuff on the tables and what not but we are going to be saving money by doing silk flowers and such. Reply:i will be using silk flowers for all but my bouquet (because i want just a simple nosegay, and the flowers are symbolic for my fiance's fraternity and my sorority, so i think that it is important that they are real...but anyway...lol) but i think that not only are they more cost efficient, but they look better at the end of the night. :) i will use them on my cake between the layers, and for the small amount that will be on the tables. great use of budget! and good luck!

In a wedding, what color flowers would go with navy dresses?
I am getting married in July of 2007. I have my bridesmaids wearing navy but am totally stumped on what color flowers to have. Initially I was going to go with yellow and white flowers calla lilies and roses. I keep looking at it and feel like I need to go with more color or just stick to white flowers. I just am not sure I like the yellow as the stand out color by itself. any suggestions?

My second choice, would be magenta with the navy which would give you a larger variety of flowers. Magenta Star Gazer lillies would really brighten up that Navy! You could also accesorize with other magenta items at the altar and at the reception.
Navy can be very stunning IF you select the correct accent colors. You may also want to decorate with silver, too. Silver necklaces for your attendants...silver decorations as well.
It will be a lovely wedding....navy is a classic color just accesorize very carefully. Enjoy your wedding!!!

Sometimes ordering online you pay HUGE fees and are not guaranteed that what you ordered is what will actually show up at the doorstep. They usually have a 'substitution policy' which you must agree to, that if they cannot fill your request they will substitute flowers of their choosing - not your choice, and usually not even in the same price range (they'll charge you for roses and send daisies).

Another good one is www.growersbox.com - I have not used them, but they get good reviews on other sites. They also have LOTS of flowers - not just roses.
Yet another one is www.bigrose.com, but I think they only have roses.
I LOVE real flowers. Sometimes people think you can save by using silks, maybe you can, but I only paid 64 cents each for a real roses and I have seen some silks for $3 each.
Two more options: Costco.com sells bulk flowers as does Walmart I believe. If you live by a Walmart you can also order them right from the store (a special order) and they are cheap!!!
The only drawback.......it takes LOTS of time to assemble them. I didn't do bouquets - I wouldn't even go there....we only used them for the reception and church and rehearsal dinner. But, if you know someone that can do this - all the better! Again, it's stressful because they have to come last minute (for freshness) - but it's worth it and I would do it again in a minute. 250 roses at the florist would have been $1,000 and we only paid $160!
