Hi all, i am looking for some place that lists the average costs for certain flowers in the midwest based on the time of year and such. I am trying to decide which flowers will be the most economical out of the choices I want for my wedding. I am currently looking at Gerbera daisies, or Sweet Peas. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Wedding Flowers Questions!?
I worked as a floral designer in Minnesota for over 15 years. I would suggest you go to at least three different florists and ask for price quotes. Tell them you are on a budget and then see what they suggest. Very few flowers are grown locally in this area, so you won't save much by asking for local flowers. You will save by finding a florist who does good work at a reasonable price and who will suggest different ways to do things that will save you money.
However, to specifically answer your question, you probably don't want to ask for spring flowers like tulips, lilacs and lily of the valley unless they are blooming here. Gerberas are available most of the year, so you are safe with them. Also keep in mind that some flowers don't hold up well enough to be used in wedding bouquets because they wilt too fast or because their stems are to delicate.
Again, go check out some florists. Most, if not all of them will give you a quote at no charge and you don't have to tell them you are shopping around.

If you are having your wedding at a place where another wedding will be held the same weekend, you may be able to share to cost of the flowers with the other wedding party.
My aunt once owned a business that specialized in flowers for wedding %26amp; wedding consulting. This was an option that some people do consider.
When my sister got married, her flowers were bought wholesale (b/c of aunt's license) but she still spent a small fortune on flowers that ended up at my place when everything was over.
Note on silk flowers...
They are Gorgeous, I still have my wedding bouquet and it looks just as good today as it did 10 years ago.
BUT, some churches will NOT allow the use of silk flowers. They may allow them in the reception hall but not in the sanctuary. If you start to think along those lines, clear it with your church before you invest the cash.
Reply:If you're looking for economical.....have you considered making your own arrangements out of silk flowers? Some look quite real(including the gerbera daisies, which I love) and they'll last forever so they make great gifts for your bridal party. Depending on your skills, they can be dramatic (huge bouquet) or simple....single or triple calla lilly (just wrap the stems together with silk ribboon and secure with decorative pins )for example. People may say "It's your wedding day, go all out" but flowers die and in the end it is you, the food and the music that people remember.
Reply:Call a wholesale florist.....they know market prices. If you are Columbus, Ohio there are two downtown. If you are near LA, the downtown flower market is very inexpensive. Farmer's markets also would be very inexpensive, especially if you could let them know in advance what you need.
On the other hand, it is your wedding....not a time to choose the cheapest flower, as it will be in the photos you show your grandchildren. Buy what moves you and you won't regret it.
Sweet Peas are very fragile and won't hold up even to the reception. Gerbera daisies are very bright and bold and would be difficult to match to a satin and sequined gown. Try to match the flowers to the rest the wedding starting with your dress. Roses are tough and available year round.(it takes quite a while to dethorn them). It may be better to go with just a few flowers rather than a massive bridal bouquet. Think a few white callas versus a 3 dozen rose bouquet by viewing bride's magazines for ideas.
Reply:Well...some things to think about...Sweet peas are wonderful, and so are gerbera daisies. However you will have to put wires in the daisies...like you would on most arrangements...and depending on how long your wedding is, they might look really bad by the end of it. Sorry....they do not last long, they brown....
Now as for the list of flowers....try calling a local florist and asking them where they buy there flowers, there should be a large market someplace. If you have any friends that business licenses they can get the flowers ( think of an open air market for just flowers )
Reply:Just a thought... for our wedding we did both fresh and silk flowers. the wedding party and my bouquet was all fresh, but all other corsages were silk, made nice momentos for the family, as they were able to keep their flowers.
If you have a Costco membership - they usually have beautiful fresh flowers. We talked to the supplier and got awesome prices and put in an order beforehand for what we wanted. Note: we were only able to get the flowers... we had help making putting arrangements together for our ceremony and reception.

Reply:well, I just finished a wedding yesterday for a woman who wanted nothing but gerbera daisies, and she was on a SERIOUS budget. Just remember, daisies are a casual flower, so if you want a more formal wedding I would stick to sweet peas.

What would be the best flowers for a October wedding?
Need some help can't seem to decide on what flowers are best for my october wedding and what color? Should it match my bridesmaids dresses?

Consider the versatile montbretia (or, botanically, Crocosmia). This is a delicate flower which consists of a series of small individual, tubular florets arranged as a comb along the upper portion of a long, slim stem (similar to a freesia). Montbretia flowers run the range of colors from yellow-orange to brick red - prefect for the season - and lend an airy and colorful wispiness to a wedding bouquet. But they can also be had in their more mature stage, after the blossoms have gone to seed and have formed small rounded pods along the comb - a textural delight.
Another popular berry which is appearing in autumn bouquets is the hypericum (the botanical name for St. John's Wort). The small, waxy, egg-shaped fruits occur in clusters at the ends of their slender stems and provide a lovely accent of texture and tone. How to preserve dried flowers (wedding bouquet)?
I dried my sister's bouquet upside down, now what? She went of to her honeymoon and I want to spray something on it or do something to it so that it doesn't fall apart. Please help!

You could have them laminated. Either that or go to a home depot and buy compounds necessary to make liquid plastic (you'll need a gas mask), dip them in it, take them out, and let it dry. It should dry pretty quickly.
Reply:you can hairspray it, probably the cheapest way too.
Or you buy glue for textile, and brush it on, leaf by leaf.

Reply:I think I would try an aerosol hairspray..............If they are falling apart you do not want to get them to wet and have them deteriorate further.....Hairspray may discolor them a little more than they are already.....Try it on one little section and see how it does.........For future help in this area....A lot of Florist have machines they freeze dry flowers in.....And you can preserve them nicely that way.....If she wants to display her bouquet....She may look into glass domes or a large Shadow box..........Just a thought...Good Luck

Reply:I dont know if this will work cause your flowers are already dry but when I had my baby shower (last November) my mom put my bouqet in my grandmas freezer and we forgot about it until the shower was over, well when I got home I put it in my freezer and forgot about it until we moved, which was almost a year later and the flower is still looking pretty good, its a little wilted but it definetely doesnt look a year old!! you should give it a try, but it may not work cause you do have to keep it in your freezer!! lol i just dont want to throw it away :)

Ok I suggest a summer/ fall look.
If it's at night time you want to go with warm colors like sunset yellow/ orange/ red and white. you wanna make it intimate and sexy.
If it's a day wedding ou wanna go for light Yellow, a hint of light blue and white. You wanna make it light, crisp and airy.
OMG I'm already seeing it.
I totally can do weddings.

Reply:Look for dresses for the bridesmaids. Choose a color that you like which will also look good on all of your bridesmaids. That should help narrow your options. Then take some photos of the dresses (or at least the color) to a florist. If you have photos of the location of the wedding location, that will help too. A good florist should be able to help you choose the color(s) that will work best. Good luck! This is what I did for my wedding and I couldn't have been happier!!

Did you have one or two favorite flowers when you were a child? Using something along that line and fill in with some greenery and baby's breath or filler flower could be nice or if you go for a theme wedding you will probably have alot more to work with. Since you are getting married in the eary fall, would the idea of a harvest theme interest you? You can use wheat, rust, white and orange daisy mums in mini pumpkins for you tables and for your bouquet a mixture of the same mums, wheat and there are some yellow roses that have a dark rust rim color . It's my wedding, %26amp; my sister has this great dress that she wants to wear. I don't mind that its white, but my MIL is freaking out. It's just a little white sundress with pink flowers. No big deal... Right?

Reply:It is usually a fashion faux pas for anyone to wear white to a wedding. However, the dress has pink flowers, so it should be fine. And, since your wedding is a beach wedding, white is a very popular color for sun dresses, so I would guess more could be wearing white. You should be the only one in a long white gown, so everyone will be focused in on you.
MIL will just have to deal with it.

The tradition of wearing white came about by high society, white is a color that dirties easily and only the rich can afford it.

Reply:It is usually a fashion faux pas for anyone to wear white to a wedding. However, the dress has pink flowers, so it should be fine. And, since your wedding is a beach wedding, white is a very popular color for sun dresses, so I would guess more could be wearing white. You should be the only one in a long white gown, so everyone will be focused in on you.
MIL will just have to deal with it.

Reply:Traditionally speaking only the bride should be in white. But you say this dress has pink flowers on it, so I guess really she isn't in all white, she would be wearing white and pink. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

I am getting married in August and want to find out which flowers are in season so we don't spent a ton of money preparing for out of season flowers. If you know a great website to check out that would be great too. Thanks so much!

I am planning an outdoor spring wedding at my parents house, and I would like some ideas for flowers.?
We are looking at early May for the wedding and I would really like for there to be a lot of flowers in bloom around the house and the yard where we want to have the ceremony. What are some flowers that bloom in late April and early May?? Please help!!!

You are probably too late to be asking this question unless you plan to plant plants rather than seedlings; however you could go with some bulbs and plant in the fall.
If you want butterflies to be part of the festivities, plant purple coneflowers (you did not mention the part of the world the planting will take place in so it is difficult to guess), sunflowers, and small ground cover in light to white colors.
If you want to plant, it is not only what you plant but how you plant. Designing a garden is a feast for the parallel trapezoid lovers. Tall flowers should be in the background and shorter plantings in the front with puddles of groupings and segments of small islands that have centerpieces of a few marbles or colored rocks. The tiles are good. Tall flowers like glads and tulips will be generous to the view until late spring. Petunias, alyssum, luminaria, and mint will be good throughout plus you can make mint teas and have fun with a few nice herbals that will be part of the taste sensations. Plant strawberries for May and serve fresh strawberries, save money and enjoy the fun. Unless you really know your roses, I would not recommend a first year chance on roses besides vines. Never forget the daisy, simplicity and beauty.

You may fair well to go to your local nurseryman or florist for the best choices of native flowers for your area. They would also be able to tell you which will be blooming in April and May.
