I'm getting married next year on quite a strict budget and I would like to do my own wedding flowers but I'm not sure how to go about it. My Groom has a dark red waistcoat and my bridesmaids are in purple and lilac. I know I want Carnations in my bouquets and as buttonholes. Can anyone give me advice and know where I can get lessons to help me design and make my own wedding flowers? I live in Carlisle, Cumbria, UK

Hello , i am a florist and i know just how expensive wedding flowers are , just look through books to get some ideas , i do know hobby craft do ready made button holes and do a great selection of silk flowers , or do a picture search on the internet to get ideas if you lived closer i would teach you , maybe the local library has books to show you or find your local flower arranging club , or go to your local church and ask then who does there flowers it usually tends to be the head of the flower arranging club , hope you manage to find some help , and any questions u have please just contact me .
Reply:For my sisters wedding, we did our own bouquets, including here and all of the boutineers. It was EASY and a lot of FUN! We had all the brides maids over the night before the wedding and had a movie on and made all of our own bouquets. It made them more special.
the biggest trick is get PLENTY of floral tape and wires and DONT forget the pins. Look at some magazines, and do some test runs on how they do it. And DEFINITELY dont forget to cut the flowers under water. Make sure the stems are underwater.. they cut easier and it prolongs the life. Clean out the fridge and store them in there over night.
We ordered all the flowers online, and Im trying to remember where. Im sure you can find somewhere a lot closer. But it was definitely cheaper and mroe personal. Good Luck!
Reply:Go with the silk flowers --u can keep them forever... get flowers u like in the colors u are using and arrange them in a bouquet , carnations, roses, wrap them together w/green tape found in arts/crafts stores near flower section... and put them in the carrier of your choice you can use glue w/glue gun to hold em in..or to glue the flowers, baby's breath, etc wherever u deem fit... practice with a few first before making your wedding flowers... not so hard, we did it too..

Reply:You can get flowers dyed to any color you want. So you can easily get carnations in reds purples and white. But if you are on a low budget I would definately go for silk flowers. As nice as real flowers are they will die far too easily and that would be my major fear when doing my own flowers. If you use fake ones you can keep them for years to come!!
Reply:My sister spent hundreds on Carnations/button holes, her bouquet and the flower girls. Looked nice but price was stupid. The night before her wedding one of the bridesmaids realised that no flowers had been ordered for them. We nipped to the local florist and bought a bunch of purple flowers, long stemmed. £2,50, wrapped them up with a purple ribbon and they looked beautiful.
Try flower arranging at local night school. Paper flowers are very nice too. Be careful of artificial flowers, they can look very fake.

Reply:When i got married 2yrs ago at gretna green i went into the flower shop and asked for a simple boquet with my chosen colors of my dress (ivory and burgendy) I dont like real flowers as they dont last and they fall apart. if you go into gretna green, thrers a lovely flower shop on the street neat the hairderssers and they do v.cheap boquets. Mine was nothing too flashy but very nice. is it just the cost that is why you want to make your own? mine costed £40.00 for plastic ones and it was worth it. if thats still quite deer you wont actually be able to make your own for less as flowers are deer. a single rose from a flower shop is £2.00. just stick with simple, plastic and cheap. at least plastic you can keep and it'll remind you of a lovely day.

Wedding flowers?
I recently got married, and at the moment my wedding flowers are in the fridge, but they cant stay there forever, i want to know how to keep them nice, when dried out so that i can keep them nicely presented, maybe even put it in a glass box of some kind.

I have decided to use calla lilys in my wedding. What other kinds of flowers look good with them? I still have not decided on colors yet. But my mom is going to be the one making the bouquets for everyone and we will be using fake flowers so we can keep them. Mom wants me to find other flowers so she can start planning how she will arrange them. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!!

Reply:I loved Calla Lilies! They are what I used for my own bouquet. But it wasn't the traditional hand carried kind. Mine was an arm bouquet, long stems green foiliage and 6 of the most beautiful Calla Lilies. My bridesmaids carried dried wildflowers and that was all we used for flowers. I went cheap and easy for those, they weren't as important as mine. My bouquet was the only one that mattered to me so I didn't want to take away from its beauty. It was simple and I got more compliments on that one single decision than I can count. I Love the idea! Just try to remain calm, Calla Lilies are graceful, elegant flowers that don't need alot of dressing up. Simple is always best with this flower.

I don't know if you need it or not, but I have had great luck with www.save-on-crafts.com They have HIGH quality realistic silk flowers for WAY less $$$! I had fresh bouquets, but made my centerpeices (they were topiary balls covered in silk gerbera daisies) and people had no clue they werent real till they were RIGHT on top of them. I ordered about 400 gerbera daisies and they costed me around .49 cents each with shipping. GREAT bulk rates and since you will need lots I'm sure, I highly reccomend it!

However if you want to add a touch of color, make sure the colors are soft and NOT strong and bright, other wise your focus will be on the bright colored flowers and not your calla lillies.

I think silk flowers are the way to go because like you said you get to keep them and it is so expensive to have real flowers processed for keepsakes (they usually use a silking process anyway) plus they are a lot less expensive. Make sure to have your mom fix a smaller bouquet that matches your for the bouquet toss at the reception.. Congrats.

I am trying to think of spring wedding color combinations that are different. I really wanted coral and pink but I saw my cousing had those colors at her wedding last year we I refuse to be like her. I would love to try the new spring combination of lime green or (light green) with a light blue, the problem how am I going to find flowers with these colors. No I have not went to a florist yet, before I go I wanted to have a idea if anything like this exist, I didn't want to look stupid. The light blue color is hard to obtain any time of the year but particulary in spring. Spring is a lot of white and purple. There are some beautiful asters, like New England aster, but this is a fall flower. Best go with the florist for light blue.

I would use tulips there are so many colors and combinations that you can use and that are very pretty. I would use pink, white, purple, and even the tulips that are pink with red on top. What advice can you give decorating the night before at a wedding reception using fresh flowers?
I am wanting to decorate the night before using fresh red roses in vases. If we do this, how will the flowers look the next day at 530 pm? They wont be too wilted already would they already? The reason why we want to do this, is if we buy our roses fresh from a wholesaler we save sooo much money then buying arrangements at a local floral shop.
Also, can anyone recomend any wholesaler websites for flowers?

We did the same thing for my son's wedding!
One question....when and where is the reception? If it is in the summer...you will want to make sure that the hall is air conditioned WHEN you set up....not the next day. They will be fine if they are in an air-conditioned room all night. OR, on the flip side....is it a winter wedding? Again, you don't want the hall TOO HOT for the whole night. Make sure the heat is turned way down. So...if the temperature in the room is OK for the whole night, you should be fine. Ours were lovely!

We had a Saturday wedding, so the roses arrived on Thursday. On Friday, my sister and I did them up. One warning.....it takes a lot of work to unwrap, cut the stems, put them in water filled with rose preservative, etc., so allow lots of time to do this. Again, I have an air conditioned house...so it worked out good...they were in the basement (very cool) overnight. You CAN'T use standard refrigerators. (They will tell you that). Florist refrigerators are different. But, in the end, IT'S WORTH IT because you will have saved TONS of money.
Reply:Don't do it. You can't determine the temp of the room over night and through the day. If you do it, you might walk into dead flowers.
If you are having your reception at a banquet hall/reception hall, then they should do all the decorating the day of as part of your package/contract.
Reply:those flowers should arrive 5 minutes before the guests arrive at the wedding reception. Choose someone in your area and get a discount because you're ordering in quantity. Choose someone (some company you can trust...get references) so that they can be trusted to bring the flowers timely.

Reply:For a 5:30pm wedding, you want to decorate the MORNING of the wedding, not the night before. The flowers will look horrible. I know this because I talked to our florist about it. We had our wedding at 5:30 and she was there bright and early the morning of our wedding to decorate. It was great. Everything looked wonderful. She did a GREAT job and so, I feel like if she....a professional florist.....chose to do them the morning of, then she's probably right.

I did my flowers for my engagement party and my shower. I used orchids, calla lillies (engagement) and red roses (shower). I didn't do my wedding because of wedding nerves and stress. With wedding nervousness and last minute preperations...flowers were not my focus. But it's possible and may save you a ton of money.
I'm not a florist, but from my experience these flowers last forever. The key is to get REALLY fresh flowers, I'm not sure where your getting your flowers but I told my florist to make sure their fresh. Can the wholesale people help with that? Or try a supermarket, that's where i bought the roses and the girl helped me with coordinating.
I did the arrangement the day before both parties, and both were refrigerated the night before. I do think they'll be okay because my flowers lasted weeks after the event!!!! We gave them to guests and the said they were really strong and healthy. Out of the 2 arrangements (mini calla lillies and cymbidium orchids lasted longer) 3 weeks after the wedding

I didn't fill the vases very high with water overnight for transporting, they need enough so the stems are touching the water. Fill them up when you get there...
The first arrangement took longer because I wasn't sure what to do??? So be prepared for some flowers to be more managed and may break. Ugggh. Once the first is done the rest are easier.

What advice can you give decorating the night before at a wedding reception using fresh flowers?
Hi and congratulations!
We did the same thing for my son's wedding!
One question....when and where is the reception? If it is in the summer...you will want to make sure that the hall is air conditioned WHEN you set up....not the next day. They will be fine if they are in an air-conditioned room all night. OR, on the flip side....is it a winter wedding? Again, you don't want the hall TOO HOT for the whole night. Make sure the heat is turned way down. So...if the temperature in the room is OK for the whole night, you should be fine. Ours were lovely!

We had a Saturday wedding, so the roses arrived on Thursday. On Friday, my sister and I did them up. One warning.....it takes a lot of work to unwrap, cut the stems, put them in water filled with rose preservative, etc., so allow lots of time to do this. Again, I have an air conditioned house...so it worked out good...they were in the basement (very cool) overnight. You CAN'T use standard refrigerators. (They will tell you that). Florist refrigerators are different. But, in the end, IT'S WORTH IT because you will have saved TONS of money.
Reply:Don't do it. You can't determine the temp of the room over night and through the day. If you do it, you might walk into dead flowers.
If you are having your reception at a banquet hall/reception hall, then they should do all the decorating the day of as part of your package/contract.
Reply:those flowers should arrive 5 minutes before the guests arrive at the wedding reception. Choose someone in your area and get a discount because you're ordering in quantity. Choose someone (some company you can trust...get references) so that they can be trusted to bring the flowers timely.
Reply:We did the same thing. We made sure the roses were still closed on Friday so they would be open by Saturday. Looked great!!
Reply:Set up everything but the flowers. I would be too afraid they'd wilt. Keep them refrigerated until a few hours before.
Reply:We do not have flower wholesalers here but we do have WalMart and a Copps store which have fresh roses daily for cheap. You can buy them a day ahead, keep them in a cool place so they stay crispy.
Reply:For a 5:30pm wedding, you want to decorate the MORNING of the wedding, not the night before. The flowers will look horrible. I know this because I talked to our florist about it. We had our wedding at 5:30 and she was there bright and early the morning of our wedding to decorate. It was great. Everything looked wonderful. She did a GREAT job and so, I feel like if she....a professional florist.....chose to do them the morning of, then she's probably right.

I did my flowers for my engagement party and my shower. I used orchids, calla lillies (engagement) and red roses (shower). I didn't do my wedding because of wedding nerves and stress. With wedding nervousness and last minute preperations...flowers were not my focus. But it's possible and may save you a ton of money.
I'm not a florist, but from my experience these flowers last forever. The key is to get REALLY fresh flowers, I'm not sure where your getting your flowers but I told my florist to make sure their fresh. Can the wholesale people help with that? Or try a supermarket, that's where i bought the roses and the girl helped me with coordinating.
I did the arrangement the day before both parties, and both were refrigerated the night before. I do think they'll be okay because my flowers lasted weeks after the event!!!! We gave them to guests and the said they were really strong and healthy. Out of the 2 arrangements (mini calla lillies and cymbidium orchids lasted longer) 3 weeks after the wedding

I didn't fill the vases very high with water overnight for transporting, they need enough so the stems are touching the water. Fill them up when you get there...
The first arrangement took longer because I wasn't sure what to do??? So be prepared for some flowers to be more managed and may break. Ugggh. Once the first is done the rest are easier.

Ovando has great architectural arrangements with long Bear Grass leaves (which is cheaper than flowers and you can buy online) and minimal flowers, they charge soooo much for so little. But they don't look too hard, look under shop online and weddings for inspiration.
